Tequila Sunrise

HighballBuild & sink
Built with: Tequila · Orange Juice · Grenadine

Origin

Bobby Lozoff and Billy Rice · Trident, Sausalito · 1971

Modern grenadine-and-OJ version created at the Trident in the early 1970s; popularized after Mick Jagger drank one there in June 1972, inspiring the Eagles' 1973 song. An earlier, unrelated Tequila Sunrise (with crème de cassis) appears in 1930s Arizona.

A layered showstopper: bright, fruity, and beautiful.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz Tequila
  • 4 oz Orange Juice
  • ½ oz Grenadine

Instructions

  1. Fill a tall glass with ice.
  2. Add tequila and orange juice, stir gently.
  3. Slowly pour grenadine down the inside of the glass. It will sink and create the sunrise effect.
  4. Garnish with an orange slice and cherry.

Tips

  • Don't stir after adding grenadine. The layered look is the point.
  • Use freshly squeezed OJ for a huge improvement.
